Investors in People

We firmly believe in the value of training. It’s a route by which anyone can expand their skills, take on new roles and secure promotions to more senior positions. It’s why we ensure that every staff member has a personal development plan and why we give everyone the opportunity to enrol in additional training with recognised providers such as the Retrofit Academy and Think Construction.

This commitment is demonstrated by our long accreditation with the Investors In People standard and why, in 2023, we were awarded the Investors In People Silver Award.

Staff Engagement

In 2023, we held our first annual employee engagement day. It was a big success and will now be a regular feature of the SBS calendar. It was an opportunity to keep everyone informed of our work and strategic direction, to celebrate our progress, and to gather feedback on how we can continue to improve.
Featuring activities, entertainment and dinner, it was also a chance to relax, have fun and recognise the outstanding efforts made by individuals across all parts of the business.

The event followed a staff survey that produced excellent feedback (between 94% and 100% agreement) on statements such as:

  • “We maintain a transparent and open culture throughout the business”

Apprenticeships

SBS is strongly committed to apprenticeships as a route to career progression. Some of our most senior managers originally started with us in apprenticeship roles and, currently, apprentices make up around 12% of our workforce. In the coming years, we aim to raise that percentage even higher, and we’re backing our recruitment programme with extensive on-the-job training.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2023, we took the opportunity to interview some of our apprentices and to seek their views on how their training has advanced their careers.
